New Season Opens with a Flourish – and a Storm
October 8th: The Club’s third season kicked off with testing fishing conditions – a tricky cocktail of 25-30mph winds, plenty of cloud and occasional heavy showers, but interspersed with some good sunny intervals.
The Hillenbrand/Ragland party from Cincinatti rose to the challenge and fished hard over two days to catch dozens of bonefish, an occasional barracuda and a black-tip shark. Despite several tackle malfunctions and a high number of fish lost due to the inexperience of some of the younger participants, everyone had good sport – and some were exceptionally successful. Jake and Eric Ragland had 17 bones on their first day out and for Eric this was his first ever day of fly-fishing. Gus and Dick Hillenbrand had 13 bones on the second day.
By the third day, however, we were in the middle of a big storm that blasted Florida and the Bahamas with 40-45mph winds and driving rain that made fishing impossible. All very Irish….
