Bigger & better
Some very nice bonefish have succumbed to Club anglers over the past ten days, not least an 8-pounder taken by Stacy Martin from St Louis, which was her first ever. The fat fish was weighed (at just over 8lbs) and measured (at 28.25 inches) by Robin the guide, which meant the evening Cellar committee meeting (which checks for exaggerations and lies, against photographic records) was for once uncontentious. This was one of the best fish taken in 2012 and possiby the very best. It was also one of 17 fish taken by Stacy and her husband Davis that day.
Tim Pettigrew from London may feel somewhat hard done by since one of his fish, initially estimated at 8lbs too, was cut down to 7lbs by the ruthless committee, which convenes at the cocktail hour and is not known for its largesse.
The past week also saw several other 6lb+ fish boated, including two taken on consecutive casts by Paul Dingle from Montreal. Paul’s wife Claire also bagged a 6-pounder, as did their friend Jim Pigott from Seattle and as did Trish Findlater from Ireland (a personal best for her).
Some especially good days were enjoyed by Irish anglers Margaret Downes (who had, or shared in, bags of 25, 19, 15 & 13 bonefish), Mike & Mark Shortt (16 & 12) and Alex & Trish Findlater (16 & 15). And general manager Sandy says there have been more bonefish of 4lb plus taken this week than in any other week since the opening of the Club in 2009.
